Paula Durbin-Westby, Gilboa’s Music Minister, will put Gilboa’s historic organ through its paces in an evening of wonderful music at the Christmas Organ Recital on December 5th at 7pm.
Durbin-Westby’s organ selections will include one of the most famous organ works by J. S. Bach, the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, as well as the beautiful Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Both of these pieces are well-known and have been used as music in numerous movies and shows. The program will also include the Prelude, Fugue, and Chaconne by Dietrich Buxtehude, probably the most important German composer from the middle Baroque period, right before Bach.
The concert will then move toward Christmas music, starting with chorales (hymns) by Bach that would have been well known in his day but are less familiar to us now. A selection of early American and Appalachian tunes will feature guest artists Linda Salisbury on cello and Coby Westby on fiddle. Linda Salisbury is a cellist with the Rappahannock Pops and also the author of the popular Bailey Fish Adventure series. Coby Westby is a student of local fiddler Alex Caton.
The final portion of the concert will feature favorite carols and hymn with everyone invited to join in. The public is welcome – please join us.
